Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of building CartZA (on-demand food delivery across university campuses), Infralitix (enterprise AI and automation systems), and scaling Gomora Boerboel into a nationally recognized digital brand.

Here are the 3 non-obvious, practical lessons I learned the hard way about building technology that actually makes money and impacts real people:

"If your tech requires the user to change how they naturally live or communicate, your product will fail. Build where they already are."

1. Solve the "Last 100 Metres" Problem First

When we started CartZA at the University of the Free State (UFS), standard GPS apps couldn't locate specific student residence blocks, gates, or lecture halls. Drivers got lost, food got cold, and students got frustrated.

Instead of waiting for Google Maps to map every campus sidewalk, we engineered our own localized landmark micro-routing. We turned student couriers into neighborhood micro-hubs. That singular focus on ground-level reality is what helped us win 1st Place for MTN Digital Transformation at the Enactus National Expo.

💡 The Takeaway: Don't try to build the prettiest software first. Fix the single most painful choke-point in the physical journey.

2. WhatsApp is the Operating System of African Business

Nobody wants to download another 100MB mobile app just to ask a question or book an appointment.

With Infralitix and Gomora Boerboel, we automated everything around WhatsApp. By connecting AI reasoning models and custom booking engines straight to WhatsApp, conversion rates jumped dramatically. People buy when friction is zero.
